To address the problems that NAT-enabled firewalls create for VoIP call completion, Jasomi Networks has created an enterprise version of its award winning SIP to SIP VoIP gateway product, PeerPoint, and will be running demonstrations of the technology at the Spring VON show in Seattle, WA.

Installed as a server in an organization's DMZ, PeerPoint Enterprise Edition seamlessly translates VoIP call streams between the internal private IP address space and the external global address space, enabling calls to pass into and out of the organization across the NAT boundary. Virtually all enterprises use NAT-enabled firewalls, which are well-suited to handling web, email, and remote access traffic, yet network address translation prevents many VoIP calls from completing properly. PeerPoint Enterprise Edition removes this impediment to VoIP deployment by ensuring that all call data streams are properly translated between the internal and global address spaces as calls enter and leave the enterprise. This approach does not impose any additional burden on the enterprise firewall, and unlike other solutions does not require that the enterprise firewall be replaced.

How PeerPoint Enterprise Edition works

Like PeerPoint (Jasomi's carrier-class SIP to SIP gateway), PeerPoint Enterprise Edition employs a back-to-back user agent technology base tied to an integrated media proxy. Placed in an enterprise's DMZ beside web, email, and other servers, PeerPoint Enterprise Edition splits each VoIP call into two half-calls, and controls the signaling and media streams of both halves. One half-call takes place in the organization's internal IP address space while the other uses the global IP address space. PeerPoint Enterprise Edition handles all protocol field translations between the two half-calls and also carries the call media streams between the different address spaces. To all of the other equipment involved in completing a call, PeerPoint Enterprise Edition generates the appearance of a single, perfectly ordinary call, while in fact performing all translations on the half-calls needed to cope with NAT traversal.

Deployment of PeerPoint Enterprise Edition imposes no additional load on the existing NAT-enabled firewall, and does not affect or intercept any other traffic traveling across the firewall. Unlike other solutions that require companies to reconfigure their firewall security policy, PeerPoint Enterprise Edition can be installed without controversy, and configured in a matter of minutes.
