It was founded in the late 18th cent. as a coal mining town. Architects & Engineers, Inc., has been chosen as architect and engineer of record to design the RWJ RWJ - Robert Wood Johnson RWJ - Ross, Westerfield, and Jaffe (authors of Corporate Finance) Rahway Rahway (rô`wā), industrial city (1990 pop. 25,325), Union co., NE N.J., on the Rahway River; settled c.1720 as part of Elizabethtown, inc. 1858. Plastics, clothing, pharmaceuticals, and electrical equipment are among the city's manufactures. The British were routed in skirmishes there in 1777. Fitness and Wellness well·ness (w l n s)n. Center, which is to be located at 2120 Lamberts Mill Road in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway has partnered with Fitness and Wellness Professional Services of Princeton, New Jersey, and leased a 52,000-s/f former industrial building, which will be adapted into a new fitness and wellness center. This new concept for fitness and wellness centers is rapidly growing in popularity, with Fitness and Wellness Professional Services operating four other centers throughout the State these include: RWJ Hamilton Center for Heath & Wellness, an affiliate of RWJ University Hospital, Hamilton, New Jersey, Princeton Fitness and Wellness Center, an affiliate of University Medical Center at Princeton, New Jersey and BayShore Fitness & Wellness Center Old Bridge and Hazlet, an affiliate of BayShore Community Hospital. There is also a center currently being built with Centerstate Medical Center in Freehold, New Jersey. Matthew B. Jarmel, AIA, MBA, principal of Jarmel Kizel Architects & Engineers, commented, "We are thrilled to be handling this assignment for RWJ. Not only is this new health and wellness concept very unique and innovative in the healthcare field, but this new project reflects our development expertise in adaptive reuse and the health care industry." Originally constructed for industrial purposes, 2120 Lamberts Mill Road was utilized as a cake mixing factory and most recently as a machine shop for the fabrication of fire extinguishers. The new facility for RWJ Rahway will be designed to include a fitness area, workout studios, yoga studios, an aquatic area with a lap pool, therapy pool and whirlpool, locker rooms, rehabilitation and physical therapy space that is occupied and managed by the hospital, a community health education center that is operated by the hospital, office, conference and meeting rooms and other tenant space. Also included will be a first class spa and healthy cafe. The sales office is open at the site and there has been tremendous interest in the facility with close to a 1,000 residence pre registering. Visitors are welcome to visit and learn about the facility and services offered. For this assignment, Jarmel Kizel will be providing all architecture, design and engineering services, all interior and exterior modifications, as well as all mechanical, electrical and plumbing services. Jarmel Kizel also obtained all land entitlements and helped prepare land development strategies in support of a use variance for RWJ.
