Publicly accessible computer network connecting many smaller networks from around the world. It grew out of a U.S. Defense Department program called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), established in 1969 with connections between computers at the

KDDI purchased 47 percent of JCN for 33 billion yen (U.S.$276 million) in March 26, but the company is now looking to purchase an additional 28 percent stake from Fujitsu Ltd. The purchase is estimated at 20 billion yen. Once completed, KDDI will have a 75 percent stake in JCN. The remainder will be held by Tokyo Electric Power Co.

Assuming the purchase goes through, analysts expect KDDI to step up the fiber-optic rollout and offer video-on-demand services to customers. In January, KDDI absorbed utility company Tokyo Electric's fiber-optic communications business. Through these acquisitions, KDDI hopes to capture a 30 percent share of the home fiber-optic market in the greater Tokyo region.
