Jane Robelot, Calvin Hughes to Anchor Expanded News at WGNX-TV, CBS Atlanta; Andrea Arceneaux to Anchor Weekend News.
"Hiring Jane and Calvin is a major step in our mission to achieve the full potential of CBS Atlanta," said WGNX Vice President and General Manager Allen Shaklan. "We are committed to providing our viewers with local news that is meaningful and relevant to their lives."
"Jane Robelot is an accomplished and respected news veteran, while Calvin Hughes is a bright and engaging talent who has already distinguished himself in a top ten market," said News Director Mike Cavender. "Their collective strengths in news gathering and anchoring will serve as an excellent catalyst for our local news expansion."
The initial phase of that expansion begins this fall, with an additional hour added to the evening news, which will then air from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Further program expansion is scheduled for later this year, when two hours of local morning news will be added.
Robelot and Hughes will anchor the 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts at the station beginning with the fall season.
A native of Greenville, S.C., with many ties to the Atlanta community, Robelot had been a CBS News anchor and correspondent since March 1995. She also has wide-ranging local news anchor experience, having been on the news team at WCAU-TV in Philadelphia from 1990 to 1995, beginning as a general assignment reporter before being promoted to the main anchor team in 1992. Prior to that she was an anchor and reporter at WSPA-TV, the CBS affiliate in Spartanburg, S.C. She began her broadcasting career as news and sports director and reporter at WSSP-AM in Clemson, S.C. Robelot earned her bachelor's degree in economics from Clemson University.
Calvin Hughes has been a news reporter and weekend anchor at KXAS-TV, the NBC affiliate in Dallas, since 1995. He previously was a reporter at WDKT-TV and WKYT-TV in Lexington, Ky.; WTVW-TV in Evansville, Ind.; and KOMU-TV in Columbia, Mo. He also was a radio news anchor and reporter at KBIA-FM in Columbia. Hughes earned his B.A. in broadcast journalism from the University of Missouri at Columbia.
In addition to Robelot and Hughes, Andrea Arceneaux has joined the WGNX news team as weekend anchor and weekday reporter. Arceneaux most recently was an anchor for the FOX Affiliate in Raleigh, N.C., and previously co-anchored a number of programs on the Cable News Network (CNN), including "Early Edition." Prior to that, Arceneaux anchored local news in Augusta, Ga. She began her career as a reporter producer at the ABC affiliate in Lexington, Ky., in 1989.
Expanding and strengthening its local news programming has been a clearly stated goal of WGNX's since the station was purchased earlier this year by Meredith Corp. (NYSE: MDP). The station already has announced it is building a new facility as another critical element to achieving its goal. The new building will be located in midtown near the Atlantic Steel redevelopment area, and will provide for expanded facilities and allow for the rapid introduction of upgraded technology.
WGNX, the CBS affiliate serving Atlanta, is owned by Meredith Corporation, one of America's leading media and marketing companies. Meredith businesses center on magazine and book publishing, television broadcasting and integrated marketing.
The Meredith Broadcasting Group includes 12 television stations that reach nearly 10 percent of television households across the continental United States.
