Both Root and Maureen O'Brien in the Audio Partners/Cover to Cover version (see my starred review in KLIATT, November 2000) give wonderful readings. O'Brien's, so beautifully nuanced and accurate, is deeply satisfying, and the superior rendition. Her characterization of Jane is especially good. Libraries would be wise to have both versions. Choose between the two readings based on a preference in pacing: O'Brien's is particularly measured, which may not suit some as well as Root's energetic version, demonstrated by its being a full hour shorter.
