He worked in media ranging from fine art painting to cartooning, but is best remembered for his posters. Flagg was born in Pelham Manor, New York. , an illustrator known for military-recruiting posters--namely, Uncle Sam Uncle Sam, name used to designate the U.S. government. The term arose in the War of 1812 and seems at first to have been used derisively by those opposed to the war. Possibly it was an expansion of the letters "U.S. saying, "I Want You"--had a hand in recruiting forest stewards, too. In 1939, he painted a 4-by-5-foot poster and magazine cover for AMERICAN FORESTS American Forests is a nonprofit conservation organization that promotes healthy forests and urban tree planting. The organization was established in 1875 as the American Forestry Association, by physician/horticulturist John Aston Warder and a group of like-minded citizens . An appraisal put its value as high as $15,000. We're ready for Antiques Roadshow. |
