Jakob + MacFarlane: theatre, Saint-Nazaire, France.

Formerly a busy hub for transatlantic liners, the French port city of Saint-Nazaire suffered extensive damage during the Second World War. One of its wartime casualties, the city's old railway station, is set to be revived through an inventive scheme by Paris-based Jakob + MacFarlane MacFarlane or Macfarlane is a surname shared by:
  • Alan Macfarlane (born 1941), a professor of anthropological science at Cambridge University
  • Alexander Macfarlane (mathematician) (1851-1913), a Scottish-Canadian logician, physicist, and mathematician
which inserts a theatre and rehearsal space within the footprint of the station building. The original 4.5m square structural grid is extruded upwards in response to different functions (scenery fly spaces, auditorium, lighting rig, and so on) generating a powerful, cubic geometry. This language of irregularly extruded volumes is a strong presence in the fractured urban landscape, recalling appropriately maritime images of shipyards and containers.
