Jacobs Receives Contract from the Florida Department of Transportation.

:JEC) announced today that a subsidiary company and Granite Construction Company have received a contract from the Florida Department of Transportation The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is a decentralized agency charged with the establishment, maintenance, and regulation of public transportation in the state of Florida[1].  (FDOT FDOT Florida Department Of Transportation ), District 6, for a design-build project to reconstruct the U.S. 1 and Jewfish jewfish: see grouper.

The project involves reconstructing the two-lane roadway north of Jewfish Creek, building a new high-level bridge over Jewfish Creek to replace an existing low-level drawbridge drawbridge: see bridge. , and replacing the causeway over Lake Surprise with a low-level bridge. The low-level bridge will restore the water flow which is currently severed by the existing causeway. The highway will remain two lanes, but will include a wider, paved northbound shoulder to be used for emergency situations such as hurricane evacuation and a concrete safety barrier in the median to prevent head-on crashes. The project is adjacent to the Everglades National Park and falls within the boundaries of the Florida Keys National Marine sanctuary The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is a U.S. National Marine Sanctuary in the Florida Keys. It includes the third-largest coral barrier reef in the world. It also has extensive mangrove forest and seagrass fields. . The project includes many environmental enhancement features, including a wildlife crossing that will allow animals to safely cross under U.S. 1.

In making the announcement, Jacobs Group Vice President Allyn Taylor stated, "This significant project emphasizes our expertise in the design-build delivery of major infrastructure work. This project is the first design-build project of this magnitude for District 6, and we are excited to continue our relationship with the FDOT and to work with our partner Granite Construction Company to make this long-planned project a reality."
