Construction on this $220 million project begins in 2001 with completion scheduled for 2005. The team will provide a broad range of construction management services for 5.4 miles of new track, two bascule bridge a counterpoise or balanced drawbridge, which is opened by sinking the counterpoise and thus lifting the footway into the air. The contract will extend Muni Metro light rail service south from its current terminal at Fourth and King Streets to the Bayshore CalTrain Station in Visitacion Valley. Tracks will be constructed primarily in the center of the street to improve safety and reliability. Eighteen stops will be provided. The project is primarily funded from the Proposition B half-cent sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax.
