ACEC announced the award winner at the 2003 Engineering Excellence Awards in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes projects that contribute to the engineering profession through innovation, expertise, and ingenuity.

The RSW provides a long-needed solution to the competing issues of endangered fish species migration and water usage. In addition to leading the overall design on this innovative, first-of-its-kind fish weir, Jacobs managed the project and provided construction assistance to the Corps. The Jacobs team met an aggressive schedule of 12 months.

The surface weir provides many benefits to the Northwest region, including enhanced fish passage, higher survival rates, and reduced passage delays. This means more juvenile salmon can safely find their way to the ocean, potentially reversing the downward trend of salmon returns. Accomplishing this while using less water than before makes more water available for power generation, reducing the need for an alternate energy source.

Testing of the completed RSW during the 2002 spring migration documented the effectiveness of the structure's unique design with fish passage results that exceeded expectations. Additional testing is planned for future years, with the Corps and other regional stakeholders looking at potential future sites where an RSW might improve fish passage and water usage.

Jacobs, with over 35,000 employees and revenues approaching $5.0 billion, provides technical, professional, and construction services globally.
