Jacobs Engineering Group leaps to environmental firms' top spot.

Pasadena-based Jacobs was No. 1 on The List this year with 740 employees working in Los Angeles County. Last year Jacobs was ranked No. 2 with 520 employees in Los Angeles County.

This year "has been the best year ever for environmental work" for the 47-year-old company, said Robert Clement, vice president of marketing. Jacobs grabbed headlines and saw its stock price shoot up earlier this year when it teamed with Irvine-based Fluor Corp. and won the $2.2 billion contract to clean up a nuclear weapons facility in Fernald, Ohio.

But Clement said that Jacobs' growth is not based just "any single" contract win.

"There were a significant number of wins this year," to do clean-up on government military bases as well as work for private industry, said Jacobs marketing chief Clement.

Jacobs, with 740 Los Angeles County employees, surpassed James M. Montgomery Consulting Engineers Inc., which was No. 1 last year. James M. Montgomery merged in June with Watson Hawksley, a firm based in the United Kingdom, to become Montgomery-Watson.

New Parsons Chairman Leonard Pieroni restructured the company in January, and created the environmental services company by combining the environmental staffs of Parsons subsidiaries Engineering Sciences Inc., Ralph M. Parsons Co. and Parsons Main Inc., Fox said.
