"It was very difficult to put up the show, which normally needs six months," said Georg Kindel, head of the organisers, World Tribute Productions.

The concert, which was to have been staged at the Austrian capital's spectacular imperial palace of Schoenbrunn, looked as if it might have to be cancelled altogether at one stage after US media reports said the headline acts, including R&B singers Mary J. "I actually spoke to Mary (J. Blige) herself and she really is working it out to try to be here," he had told reporters.

Jermaine Jackson, 54, said he and his partners had also spoken to Stevie Wonder, Chris Brown, R. Kelly, Akon, Natalie Cole and actress Angela Bassett about appearing but could not confirm a final line-up.

"Given the turn of events of recent days, the media value won't be as much as anticipated," said city official, Renate Brauner.

At Friday's news conference in Vienna, Jermaine Jackson said London had been chosen for the rescheduled event because that was where Michael Jackson was to have staged his comeback Comeback

"The purpose of the show was to give something back to the fans. It's not about name-dropping, but about doing a wonderful tribute to my brother," he said.

"Due to time-scheduling, many artists who wanted to be part of the show couldn't attend," he said.

Organiser Kindel said those who had bought tickets for the Vienna concert would be refunded. Prices ranged from 63-519 euros.

Some 65,000 fans had been expected to attend and millions more to watch it live on television.
