JUST SHY OF PERFECT TEEN MISSED 2 SAT QUESTIONS.

Byline: Karen Maeshiro Staff Writer

PALMDALE - Travis Dawson III, a junior at Highland High School Highland High School or Highlands High School may refer to:

In the United States:
  • Highland High School (Gilbert, Arizona)
  • Highland High School (Bakersfield, California)
  • Highland High School (Palmdale, California)
, missed having a perfect overall 1,600 score on the SAT by two math questions.

Dawson scored a perfect 800 on the verbal section of the Scholastic Assessment Test and a 770 on the math portion.

``Well, I could say I'm disappointed that I didn't get a 1,600 but I'm glad I got a good score,'' said Dawson, a 3.7-GPA student in the school's International Baccalaureate program, a rigorous college-preparatory program.

Dawson said he did nothing to prepare for the college-entrance exam, except for the time he took the SAT as a seventh-grader and scored 1,220 - 630 on the math and 590 on the verbal.

Dawson's favorite subject is band, which he has been in since the sixth grade and says is the one class he has enjoyed the most throughout his school years. He plays trumpet in the marching band Noun 1. marching band - a band that marches (as in a parade) and plays music at the same time
band - instrumentalists not including string players
, symphony band and wind ensemble.

``It's fun. I'm not obliged to turn in any homework,'' Dawson said.

Dawson said he wants to attend the University of California, Los Angeles UCLA comprises the College of Letters and Science (the primary undergraduate college), seven professional schools, and five professional Health Science schools. Since 2001, UCLA has enrolled over 33,000 total students, and that number is steadily rising. , study music and become a high school band director.

``It's something that I've always been interested in,'' Dawson said.

Music runs in the family. His sister, Laura, a 2001 graduate of Highland, goes to UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
and plays first trumpet in the band there and is also first chair in the Junior Philharmonic Orchestra of California.

Dawson's mother plays the clarinet and piano. ``All my Dad plays is the radio,'' Dawson quipped.

``I think he would be a good (band director),'' said Travis' mother, Sheryl Dawson. ``He's so creative. He loves writing music. That would be a good way to express his creativity. By being a band director, he can compose and teach privately on the side.''

Dawson also is a standout in Latin. He's the first junior to ever take Latin 4, so teacher Ann Robins has to create a special fifth-year Latin course for him next year.

``Travis moved here from the East Coast, where Latin is more commonly taught. He had Latin in junior high. When he came here as a ninth-grader, he was put in Latin 2,'' Robins said.

``He's just a brilliant boy. This is a kid who, he could read anything in Latin. He's just amazing. The other kids rely on him for help,'' Robins said. ``He's a total delight, although he tends to not do his work.''

But that's not a problem because overnight, he can translate from Latin to English 200 lines of the Aeneid, the epic poem Noun 1. epic poem - a long narrative poem telling of a hero's deeds
epic, heroic poem, epos

poem, verse form - a composition written in metrical feet forming rhythmical lines

chanson de geste - Old French epic poems
 by Virgil, Robins said.

``Back when I was in school, we did 50 lines - 15 lines a night. When my students can do that, I'm really pleased with that,'' Robins said. ``But Travis can sit down in a couple of hours and dash it off.''

Robins described Travis as fun, creative and having a dry sense of humor Noun 1. sense of humor - the trait of appreciating (and being able to express) the humorous; "she didn't appreciate my humor"; "you can't survive in the army without a sense of humor"
sense of humour, humor, humour
. In class, he announces a word of the day, writes it on the board and tells classmates Classmates can refer to either:
  • Classmates.com, a social networking website.
  • Classmates (film), a 2006 Malayalam blockbuster directed by Lal Jose, starring Prithviraj, Jayasurya, Indragith, Sunil, Jagathy, Kavya Madhavan, Balachandra Menon, ...
the definition. Asked for an example, Robins demurred, saying the one she remembers shouldn't be in print.

``You would think a student of that caliber would be boring or nerdish, but he's not. He's just wonderful,'' Robins said.

Sheryl Dawson said her son took the SAT in the seventh grade when the family was living in Alabama as part of the Duke University Talent Identification program.

``He was in the gifted class in middle school. The idea is to give gifted students a test beyond their capabilities to see how well they could do,'' said Sheryl Dawson, who herself graduated from high school at 15 and is a stay-at-home mom.

Her son also took the PSAT PSAT Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test
