JUST PUPPY LOVE IT'S A DOG-EAT-DOG TALENT SHOW.

VALENCIA -- A dozen four-footed competitors really put on the dog Saturday afternoon at the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Home and Business Expo.

Three-year-old Chiqui, a long-haired Chihuahua, and her year-old pup Swee-Pea, were among furry contestants in the trade show's first dog talent show.

 purr garnered her ``Best Singer'' honors among all the other potential canine crooners.

Wearing a T-shirt that declared ``Dogs Are Made of Love and Fur,'' host Stephanie Duke of StarPups introduced each dog in a variety of categories and quizzed their owners on the dogs' ages and breeds.

 Lou in several categories, including ``Longest Tail'' and ``Best Trick'' -- the latter which Bubba Lou performed by waiting patiently for a treat that Aboyan placed in front of him before walking away.

It was only when Aboyan turned and snapped his fingers that Bubba Lou retrieved the biscuit.

Max, a shaggy 6-month-old Wheaton terrier terrier, classification used by breeders and kennel clubs to designate dogs originally bred to start small game and vermin from their burrows or, in the case of several breeds in this group, to go to earth and kill their prey. , overwhelmed a photographer with kisses, nearly knocking him over with affection. Max trotted away with the ``Friendliest Dog'' award.

Pam Ingram brought her 6-month-old Shih Tzu Shih Tzu (shē dz), breed of active, alert toy dog originating in Tibet centuries ago. It stands from 8 to 11 in. (20.3–27.9 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 9 to 18 lb (4.  puppy Malani, braced against the slight overcast weather with a pink ``Princess'' sweater. The short-legged canine wowed the judges as ``Cutest Puppy.''

The contest attracted the purse- to pickup-truck-sized canines with talents ranging from nearly professional to the deeply optimistic.

Judy Udoff's German shepherd German shepherd, breed of large, muscular working dog perfected in Germany at the turn of the 20th cent. It stands about 25 in. (64 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 60 to 85 lb (27.2–38.5 kg).  Xena performed a series of exercises with crisp discipline, garnering the ``Best Trained'' award.

``She's training for search and rescue,'' Udoff said. ``It's a long process and she's about halfway through.''

If there was a ``Best Effort'' award, it was clearly earned by Labrador/Irish wolfhound wolfhound: see Irish wolfhound.  mix Dutchess, a chocolate-colored dog owned by Stefanie Singer.

``He can shake hands, give a high-five and sit,'' Singer said. ``If I have cookies.''
