Thanks, in large part, to Maurice Drew.

UCLA was leading San Diego State 44-21 late in the fourth quarter in front of 50,710 - the sixth-largest in Aztecs history - Saturday at Qualcomm Stadium Los Angeles/San Diego Chargers

.

It was exactly the way the Bruins needed to start, having won just six games in each of their last two seasons.

Drew ran for a 1-yard touchdown to put the Bruins up 14-3 and returned a punt 72 yards for a score - the longest punt return In American and Canadian football a punt return is one of the punt receiving team's options to respond to a punt. A player (usually a second or third string wide receiver or running back) positioned many yards from the line of scrimmage will attempt to catch or pick up the ball  of his career. He seemed to be the only thing the only thing the Bruins needed. The Aztecs couldn't figure out how to stop him until he limped off the field early in the third quarter with leg cramps.

Trainers stretched his leg but he went into the stadium tunnel, where he received an IV. He walked back on the field midway through the third quarter but didn't return to the game, which was a blowout anyway.

Drew finished with 114 yards on 11 carries for a 10.4-yards per carry average. Backup Chris Markey picked up where Drew left off and scored on a pair of 1-yard runs in the third quarter. Justin Medlock Justin Charles "J-Med" Medlock Born October 23, 1983 in Fremont, California is a free agent American football kicker. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs and played only one regular season game for the team.  kicked a 48-yard field goal with 2:05 left in the third to put UCLA up 41-14.

Drew Olson was solid and moved into fourth place on career passing chart. The defense had interceptions from linebacker Spencer Havner (the ninth of his career) and defensive back Michael Norris. Both picks were thrown by Kevin O'Connell. Nikolas Dragovic - in his first career start - had a sack and Havner played well as usual.

But the Bruins offense stole the show. Marcedes Lewis had five receptions for 95 yards by halftime, proof that UCLA was true to its word andwill use Lewis as the focal point focal point

of its offense. He had a 40-yard reception, the longest of his career.

UCLA's first play was electric. Drew cut threw an open crease, through the middle and down the left side for a 64-yard touchdown run, which bettered his longest run of all of last year by two yards. He now has 12career touchdowns of 40 yards or more. The Bruins took just 10 seconds off the clock to score and lead 7-0.

Justin Medlock had a chance to put UCLA up 10-0 when he missed a 48-yard field goal. His field goal attempt was pushed back five yards on a UCLA penalty.

On Drew's punt return, he was never even touched. He spun around just after he caught the ball and defender Jacob Elimimian went flying pasthim. That was as close as anyone would get.

Hamilton carried the ball the last six plays of the 15-play drive and had 11 carries before the first quarter had ended. SDSU's drive spanned 70 yards over 15 plays and chewed 6:44 off the clock.

UCLA answered with its own grinding drive that culminated in Drew's touchdown run. The Bruins drove 80 yards in 15 plays that spanned 6:16. That gave UCLA a 14-6 lead. The Aztecs wouldn't score again in the second half and trailed 24-6 at halftime.

Dorrell took advantage of the Mountain West's replay challenge. He challenged what appeared to be a touchdown reception by Lewis but Lewis was ruled down at the 1. The Bruins were charged a timeout. In the Pac-10, only a booth official can challenge.

--Notes: Dorrell returned to the city where he grew up andstarred at Helix High. He was recruited by the Aztecs but chose UCLA instead. Offensive lineman Shannon Tevaga limped off the field in the second half and was replaced by Robert Chai at guard.
