I USED to love the Australian soap The Sullivans. Can you tell me anything about the actors who played the parents, Dave and Grace Sullivan, or Wendy Strehlow (nurse Judy Loveday)? I Robert Campbell, by email.
nTHE drama, set in Melbourne during the Second World War, ran from 1976 to 1983. Paul Cronin, now 66, played Dave Sullivan; with Lorraine Bayly, 60, as wife Grace. Paul has continued to work in Australia and even reprised his Sullivan role in a sketch for Aussie comedy The Late Show in 1993. Lorraine is also still working, mainly in Oz. After The Sullivans she had a stint in Neighbours in the early 1990s playing Doug WillisO meddling sister Fay Hudson. IOm afraid your memory is playing tricks on you over Wendy Strehlow. She played Sister Judy in another Aussie series, A Country Practice.
MY friend told me there was a blue moon in the sky in the 1950s. Is there any truth in this? I Mr H., Glasgow.
nTHE term Oblue moonO has nothing to do with the colour blue. It is used to refer to a second full moon within a calendar month I e.g. the full moon on July 31 this year was a blue moon as there had already been a full moon on July 2. Over the next 20 years there will be 17 blue moons I though none at all in the years 2006, 2011, 2014 and 2017. Two blue moons in one year happens approximately every 19 years. The last was in 1999, in January and March.

WHATOS the origin of the phrase Oclean as a whistleO? I I. McDonald, Perth.
nITOS a corruption of an 18th century phrase, clear as a whistle. Back then spoken commands could be misunderstood in a noisy work environment but a loud whistle was always clear. Therefore clear as a whistle came to mean unmistakable.
