LOS ANGELES Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  - A Palmdale man was convicted Monday of second-degree murder in the slaying of his mother-in-law, in whose name the man and his wife had run up tens of thousands of dollars in debt.

A Los Angeles Superior Court jury acquitted mechanic Ken Walker of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

``I think the jury did a great job. It was a long, difficult trial,'' Deputy District Attorney Vivian Moreno said. ``It was a just verdict.''

Walker's wife, Vanessa Walker, was convicted last week by a second jury of second-degree murder and acquitted of first-degree murder and the conspiracy charge.

Ken Walker's jury deliberated about a day before reaching its verdict. He faces 15 years to life in prison.

Vanessa Walker faces a prison sentence of 35 years to life, up from the standard 15 years to life for second-degree murder, because of a conviction for an earlier killing: In 1988 she had shot her then-husband to death in Contra Costa Contra Costa can refer to:

Lazarevic was last seen Aug. 25, 2001, by neighbors who saw her drive away from her home, reportedly on her way to the Walkers' home to discuss money they owed her. Lazarevic's other daughter reported her missing Aug. 28.
