Arthur Crabtree, 45, now a family law attorney residing in Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, , faces 10 charges, including one felony count of a lewd act against a child and one misdemeanor count of annoying or molesting a child.

He also is charged with attempted lewd contact with a child and multiple counts of attempting to send harmful messages to a minor and attempted annoyance and molestation of a child.

Authorities arrested Crabtree Jan. 19, 2005, at a downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. Chatsworth Superior Court Judge Melvin D. Sandvig handed the case to the jury after more than two weeks of testimony.

Deputy District Attorney Tannaz Mokayef painted Crabtree as a predator who methodically seduced girls. Mokayef called a string of witnesses, including a girl who said Crabtree had directed her in an Internet chat to masturbate masĀ·turĀ·bate

``(Crabtree is) a person walking among us, hiding a desire for little kids,'' Mokayef said in closing arguments.

Defense attorney Patrick Clancy Patrick Clancy (b. 1922) was an Irish-American folk singer best known as a member of the group ''The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem."

said his client didn't know the girl's age at the time of the chat -- he assumed she was between 24-30.

``If you thought you were 18 and older, you're not guilty,'' he said.

As for allegations of his previous Web chats with other supposed 13-year-olds who turned out to be undercover agents, Clancy said Crabtree was fully aware he was dealing with law enforcement but wanted to taunt them to retaliate for what he considered past wrongs.

``What was he trying to do?'' Clancy said. ``Keep them running in circles and on the line as long as possible without breaking the law.''

Crabtree was among five Glendale officers named in a 2001 sexual harassment sexual harassment, in law, verbal or physical behavior of a sexual nature, aimed at a particular person or group of people, especially in the workplace or in academic or other institutional settings, that is actionable, as in tort or under equal-opportunity statutes.  suit in which three female officers claimed they endured years of harassment Ask a Lawyer

Clancy said the internal investigation left his client ``mad as hell'' and looking to undermine authorities. He said Crabtree has special knowledge of how investigators run online stings.

``If you think it's a cop, you haven't committed a crime,'' he said. ``He knows where to stop without getting into trouble.''

Mokayef said Crabtree was arrested at the bus station because he clearly intended to meet with someone he met online and believed to be a minor for a possible tryst. He was found with a swimsuit, a condom, bath items and a electric massager.

``This shows you his intent,'' she said. ``This shows you what he was planning to do ... with the girl.''

Clancy said his client packed the items for a weekend getaway with his wife.
