Junior Federation Cup competition during the past decade has been unmatched by any other region in the country.

But after seven finals appearances and four titles --- the most recent coming in 2003 --- Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  suffered a rare letdown last year, finishing fifth.

Although the competition is now recognized as the USTA 18-under Girls' National Team Championships, Katarina Reveche hasn't forgotten the outcome of last year's tournament.

``Since tennis is such an individual sport, there aren't many opportunities you have to play on a team and represent So Cal,'' said Reveche, who joins Mission Viejo Mission Vi·e·jo

``We all want to win it. That's our primary goal.''

Southern California won three of four matches in last year's 16-team tournament, but a 6-1 quarterfinal setback to champion Texas soured the experience for Reveche and fellow area standouts Hilary Barte (Harvard-Westlake of Studio City) and Kristen McVitty (Calabasas).

``I think our team this year is more solid than last year,'' said Reveche, who went 2-2 in singles matches and 1-0 in doubles competition under the college-style format that consists of six singles matches and three doubles pro-sets.

``We practice together outside of tournaments and a lot of us have played together in doubles. I think that bond gives us an advantage.''

``It's definitely a challenge, but I like to work under pressure,'' said Reveche, who split time between the fourth and fifth singles spot last year. ``The whole reason we're there is to represent So Cal and win.''
