JUNIOR HIGH STUDENTS TEST WITS AT CONTEST\Chaminade College Prep takes overall title.

Chaminade College Preparatory of Woodland Hills won first place overall Saturday in the Junior High Academic Decathlon decathlon (dĭkăth`lŏn), in modern Olympic games, a contest for men held over two days and composed of 10 track-and-field events. , an annual competition for students from 40 Catholic schools in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , organizers said.

 school took top honors in the contest, which included two team events and eight individual events, said coordinator Mark Ryan, vice principal of Pius X-St. Matthias High School in Downey, where the competition was held.

Ryan said the competitions are meant to give students an opportunity, outside of athletic competition, to test their mettle.

Team events help them develop collaboration skills they can use after graduation, he said.

More than 400 students competed in two team events: the Logic Quiz, in which eight to 10 students would face 20 logic problems; and the Super Quiz, in which team members answered questions on current events, Old Testament prophets, algebra, environmental science and the novel "The Giver," by Lois Lowry.

St. Finbar student Kary Vanderborght won first place in the speech category.

Victor Masie of St. Euphrasia won second place in the science category and classmate Kelly Lazarus took third place in the English category, Ryan said.

Students from St. Catherine of Siena in Woodland Hills won second place in the Logic Quiz team event, Ryan said.
