JUNIOR COLLEGE PREVIEW: TRAINER HAS KNOW-HOW THAT MAKES COC BETTER.

Byline: Ross Siler Staff Writer

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - If you want to find the secret to success for the No. 2 College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  football team, start at the front door of the school's Physical Education Center and head downstairs until you find the weight room on the ground floor.

Every afternoon, that weight room is home to Robert dos Remedios - ``Dos'' as he's known to everyone on the Cougars team - who also is the only full-time strength and conditioning coach working at a California community college.

``I've always told our guys, `The one thing we have complete control over is our physical condition,' '' dos Remedios said.

``I can't guarantee that we're going to catch a pass or make a block. But we can control that we're going to be in better condition than the other team.''

The 37-year-old former California lineman - and Burroughs High of Burbank coach - joined the Cougars program as an assistant on Chuck Lyon's staff in 1998. He helped design the school's weight room with Lyon, then became the college's dedicated strength and conditioning coach the next year.

Now dos Remedios works daily with all of Canyons' teams. He was one of six nominees this spring for the coach of the year by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and spoke at the group's annual convention in Indianapolis.

His influence on the football program is unmistakable - starting with the Western State Conference championship T-shirt he wears. Before graduating last season, running back J.J. Arrington credited dos Remedios' workouts with helping him earn a scholarship to Cal.

In January, Lyon opened the Cougars' offseason workouts by telling his players dos Remedios was the coach in charge until the start of spring practice. Sophomore kicker Kicker

The ability to trade a bond or other debt instrument in for stock may entice investors, if they feel the stock will appreciate.
Josh Cummings added that dos Remedios' training program is more sophisticated than the one he spent a season in at Oregon.

``I've learned a lot more here than I did there,'' Cummings said. ``(Dos Remedios) uses a lot of the same drills, but the difference is that he's more hands-on. I feel like I'm definitely in better shape here than I was there.''

Dos Remedios promises all his players that if they stick to his program, they will get bigger and faster. And he has produced numerous NSCA NSCA National Systems Contractors Association

All-Americans in his five years. But his workouts are far from the traditional bench-press sessions and 40-yard dashes.

Instead, dos Remedios has specially tailored workouts that incorporate plyometrics Plyometrics is a type of exercise that utilizes a rapid eccentric movement, followed by a short amortization phase, and then followed by an explosive concentric movement, which enables the synergistic muscles to engage in the myotatic-stretch reflex during the stretch-shortening  and favor Olympic weight-lifting exercises such as the clean and jerk. His Web site has attracted more than 9,000 hits and coaches regularly stop by his office unannounced to ask for pointers.

``He's a student of his profession,'' Lyon said. ``I guarantee we're doing things that most people don't do at any level, including Division I. And it shows on the field.''

Dos Remedios also runs the Cougars players. They race up and down the length of the practice field, sometimes as many as 30 times, and almost always to the point of exhaustion.

Lyon is convinced it gives his team a mental toughness late in games, with Canyons having won in overtime already once this season. And dos Remedios is emphatic in saying no team in the country is in better condition than the Cougars.

Sophomore center Shawn Huntsinger, meanwhile, said he can feel the effects of the sessions with dos Remedios as soon as he steps on the field.

``We go into the third quarter, the other team is hanging their heads and we're not even breathing hard,'' Huntsinger said. ``That's a huge advantage.''

Dos Remedios will be at the Cougars' (4-0) game tonight at home against Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  (2-2) and is treated as a fourth coordinator by Lyon.
