College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  coach Chuck Lyon had spent much time worrying about Cerritos running back Jermaine Whiten in the week leading up to the two teams' meeting. But with Whiten rushing for a school-record 308 yards and four touchdowns in a 39-32 victory Saturday night in Norwalk, Lyon's worst fears were realized.

The sophomore back put on a dazzling performance in leading Cerritos, ranked No. 2 in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , to the victory. His last touchdown was the most spectacular, an 84-yard, sideline-to-sideline dash in which Whiten weaved his way around virtually the entire Canyons defense to make it 39-18 in the third quarter.

Fifth-ranked Canyons (1-1) jumped to an 18-7 lead early in the second quarter, largely by taking advantage of Cerritos's mistakes.
