JUNIOR/SMALL COLLEGES PREVIEW: CANYONS, MOORPARK SET FOR BIG FINISH : SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BOWL.

Teams: Canyons vs Chaffey

Kickoff: Chaffey, at 1 p.m.

Records: COC See chip on chip.  7-3, Chaffey 7-3

Outlook: What a two-year run it's been for COC, which restarted its program last season after a 17-year absence. Since their return, the Cougars have gone 14-6 in the regular season and lost 42-16 to Mt. , Canyons will face Chaffey, which tied for second in the Foothill this year.

Chaffey started the year 1-3 and won its last six games, with comeback victories in three of its last four. It will make its fourth bowl appearance in five years. Canyons is out for its first bowl victory, with a loss and tie in its only appearances.

COC and Chaffey have many similarities, including a premier ground game. Dameon Hunter averages 119 yards per game, although he has missed the last two weeks with a deep thigh bruise. He will start, but Chris Jones (80 yds. per game) will see more time if Hunter struggles.

For COC, Steve Smith (73 yds. per game), back at full strength after a high ankle and knee strain, and Major Caldwell (93 yds. per game) have the Cougars' ground game at top speed. But JC Grid-Wire All-American offensive tackle Jason Youngs will be limited. He sprained his ankle in the first half of COC's season-ending victory against Valley on Nov. 20 and has not practiced much.

Southwest, which averaged 24 points per game this season, will try to keep the Raiders' offense in check once again, but it will be more difficult this time. Moorpark's offensive line is finally healthy, as is tailback Emmanuel Evans, so coach Jim Bittner says he would like to keep the game ``boring'' and try to win with the rushing attack. Southwest relies on a quick, aggressive defense to compensate for the lack of a consistent offense, and can't afford to get into a shootout Shootout
