JUNCTION CITY WARMS TO CROWDS.

Byline: Edward Russo The Register-Guard

JUNCTION CITY Junction City, city (1990 pop. 20,604), seat of Geary co., NE Kans., at the confluence of the Republican and Smoky Hill rivers; inc. 1859. The rail, trade, and processing center of an agricultural and dairy area, it grew as the supply point for nearby Fort Riley,  - Heat? What heat?

The Scandinavian festival - a feast for the eyes, ears and stomach - kicked off in Junction City on Thursday, drawing crowds who weren't about to let 95 degrees separate them from folk dancing, crafts and Swedish meat pies.

A shaded bench gave Ron and Sharon Faust of Veneta a relatively cool spot to watch their 15-year old daughter, Anna, kick up her heels in a folkdance with other colorfully dressed young dancers.

The 44th annual festival lasts through Sunday. The event, which includes more than 80 craft and food vendors, plus art shows, dancing and other entertainment, covers several blocks in the heart of Junction City.

Temperatures are expected to hit 92 degrees on Friday, before cooling to the mid-80s on Saturday and Sunday.

Sharon Faust, a Scandinavian Festival veteran, advised people to stay cool by interrupting their strolls in the sun looking at crafts, jewelry jewelry, personal adornments worn for ornament or utility, to show rank or wealth, or to follow superstitious custom or fashion.

The most universal forms of jewelry are the necklace, bracelet, ring, pin, and earring.

Lori Larkey, who was painting a flower-like design on the lid of a wooden basket in a Norwegian folk art folk art, the art works of a culturally homogeneous people produced by artists without formal training. But Larkey said she most enjoys seeing the same customers year after year, including some who commission her to create family heirlooms. The festival "has so much tradition," Larkey said. "It's not just an opportunity to sell."

Puppet maker William Walther of Bend, who participates in festivals across the Northwest, said the Scandinavian Festival is his favorite.

The wholesome Junction City atmosphere seems to attract more families than events in other cities, Walther said.

"It's a great show," he said. "I love the food, I love the atmosphere and I love the people. A lot of families come here."
