JUMBO-SIZED CANCELLATION WILL MARK FIRST DAY ISSUE OF POSTAL SERVICE'S COMMEMORATIVE STAMP SERIES CELEBRATING 200 YEARS OF CIRCUS IN AMERICA

WASHINGTON, April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- By far the biggest first-day cancellation of a commemorative postage stamp ever will take place here at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 6, at the Smithsonian's new National Postal Museum.
The World's Largest Traveling Land Mammal -- Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus' renowned pachyderm, King Tusk, will do the honors when he places his jumbo footprint on an enlargement of the four-part stamp series to culminate the ceremonies.
Circus President and Producer Kenneth Feld will join Postmaster General Marvin Runyon for the ceremonies, which also will present a preview of the new museum.
"It's only fitting that King Tusk cancel the first commemorative stamp saluting 200 Years of Circus in America," Feld said. "The circus always has been larger than life in our nation's experience."
Greg Parkinson, executive director of Circus World Museum, other postal officials and hundreds of Washington, D.C., schoolchildren will be special guests for the ceremonies.
The public is welcome to view the cancellation ceremony, which will be held on the sidewalk in front of the Postal Museum building, located next to Union Station. It will be staged against a colorful backdrop of museum-quality, antique horse-drawn circus wagons, which will make a special pilgrimage to the nation's capital especially for the occasion.
Following the ceremonies, the elephants and horse-drawn wagons will parade to the D.C. Starplex Armory, where Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus will open a two-week engagement on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The antique circus wagons will remain on display at the D.C. Starplex Armory Tuesday and Wednesday, April 6 and 7.
