JULY DOMESTIC COMPARABLE STORE SALES ROSE 2.0 PERCENT
 AT WOOLWORTH CORPORATION
NEW YORK, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Woolworth Corporation (NYSE: Z) reported that domestic comparable store sales for the four weeks ended Aug. 1, 1992, rose 2.0 percent from the corresponding prior-year period.
Harold E. Sells, chairman and chief executive officer, said, "Domestic comparable specialty store sales for July showed good gains against plan, with athletic footwear indicating particular strength." He added, "The July increase was especially encouraging because differences in this year's calendar resulted in regularly scheduled general merchandise promotional events being shifted from the last week in July to the first week in August."
Total sales (domestic and foreign) for the four-week period rose 2.8 percent to $709 million from $690 million.
Domestic sales for the four-week period declined 0.2 percent to $395 million from $396 million. Domestic sales for the 1992 reporting period reflect the elimination of sales of some 900 stores which are part of the company's accelerated store-redeployment program. Sales generated by those stores in 1991 are reflected in the 1991 reporting period.
Foreign sales, expressed in U.S. dollars, rose 6.8 percent. If foreign exchange rates had remained constant, foreign sales would have increased 1.6 percent and total sales would have increased 0.6 percent.
For the cumulative 26 weeks ended Aug. 1, 1992, domestic comparable store sales increased 0.9 percent from the corresponding prior-year period.
Total sales (domestic and foreign) for the 26-week period declined 0.5 percent to $4,393 million from $4,415 million in the corresponding year-earlier period.
Domestic sales for the 26-week period decreased 2.6 percent to $2,502 million from $2,567 million, and foreign sales, expressed in U.S. dollars, increased 2.4 percent. If foreign exchange rates had remained constant, foreign sales would have increased 1.2 percent and total sales would have decreased 1.0 percent.
