Byline: Brent Hopkins Staff Writer

PACOIMA - Juicy Couture Juicy Couture is a contemporary line of casual apparel based in Pacoima, California, founded by Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy. Owned by the Liz Claiborne fashion company, Juicy is known for their terrycloth and velour hoodies, which are like jackets.  got a new friend in Liz Claiborne This article is about the corporation Liz Claiborne Inc. Liz Claiborne Inc. bought the locally based upstart label, a move its founders see as key to for future development. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Known for striking cuts and lush fabrics, the 9-year-old Juicy has already won the eye of Hollywood's elite and Melrose fashion plates. But co-presidents Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy have much bigger aspirations.

``We have incredible Juicy dreams,'' gushed Nash-Taylor. ``We think we can take over the fashion world, and we think Liz is the way to do it.''

The New York-based Claiborne, traded on the New York Stock Exchange New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)

under the ticker LIZ, aims to help the label grow from a niche supplier that rung up $47 million in sales last year into an international player. Plans are already being considered to build free-standing retail stores to support the line, to augment its presence in fine clothiers such as Fred Segal Fred Segal is a Los Angeles, California based clothing boutique. There are two stores, one in Hollywood (on Melrose Avenue) and the other in Santa Monica.

``It's one of the hottest growing trends in America today,'' said Angela Ahrendts, an executive vice president for Claiborne who'll oversee the label. ``There is not a huge strategy to over-exploit distribution. We want to help service their existing customers better. There's a tremendous amount of non-apparel opportunities, along with men's wear, Baby Juicy, and that's before we even talk about freestanding retail.''

, and Skaist-Levy will retain creative control of Claiborne's 31st division, a key point in getting them to sell. Under their watch, the Juicy has produced jeans and T-shirts, among others, but gained most play with its track suits - $150 for velour, $300 for cashmere cashmere

``Juicy hit upon the integration of comfortable and sexy clothing,'' said Paul Altman, a senior associate for the Sage Group, a Los Angeles- based mergers-and-acquisitions specialist that advised Juicy. ``It's for women who want to wear the same thing to the market and when they go out at night. The cuts and the fabrics are fantastic.''

Under Claiborne's ownership, Juicy predicts no major changes to its 200- employee factory. Even with a corporate partner on the other coast, Skaist-Levy doesn't expect any shift from their local production.

``We're in beautiful Pacoima,'' she said ``We started out as very small manufacturers, and if you do that, you can't be anywhere besides downtown or the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley
