The top honor - the Governor's Award - went to Kathryn Kennedy Winery's 1996 vintage red table wine, a syrah wine grown in the Maridon Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The 429 wineries that participated were mainly from California but also included entries from 20 other states as well as Canada, Mexico, Argentina and Chile. The white table wine winner was a 1996 chardonnay from McIlroy Wines of Davis, Calif., made with grapes grown in the Russian River Valley area. In the blush pink and rose table wine category, a 1997 Rose of Sangiovese wine from the Swanson vineyard in Napa Valley won the top prize. The county fair will take place from Sept. 10 through the 27th. |
