JUDGE ORDERS HOSPITAL TO FREE FUNDS FOR PAYROLL.

Byline: Andrea Cavanaugh Staff Writer

A federal judge ruled Wednesday that Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc.  Memorial Hospital can free hundreds of thousands of dollars from its bankruptcy proceedings bankruptcy proceedings n. the bankruptcy procedure is: a) filing a petition (voluntary or involuntary) to declare a debtor person or business bankrupt, or, under Chapter 11 or 13, to allow reorganization or refinancing under a plan to meet the debts of the party  to pay more than 200 employees set to be laid off next month.

Judge Kathleen Lax ordered $225,000 to be released to pay employees, whose regular payday is Friday. Another hearing is set for Jan. 7.

The ruling was welcome news for employees who will lose their jobs in mid-January, said Mary Anne Krause Krause

The 49-bed hospital, which closed its doors Friday, filed for Chapter 11 protection three days later in Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. .

The filing means the medical center must now receive judicial approval for any significant business decisions.

In court papers, the hospital listed debts totaling $8 million to more than 450 creditors, and assets of $14.5 million.

The bankruptcy proceedings won't affect negotiations for a possible partnership between the hospital and the county, said Ventura County Supervisor Kathy Long, whose district includes the hospital.

A meeting between the two sides is set for Jan. 6.
