JUBILEES : CALKINS.


The 50th wedding anniversary of Helen and William Calkins of Tarzana was celebrated with a luncheon party for 100 family members and friends at the Porter Valley Country Club in Northridge.

The couple met in 1945 at a dance in Fort Knox Fort Knox [for Henry Knox], U.S. military reservation, 110,000 acres (44,515 hectares), Hardin and Meade counties, N Ky.; est. 1917 as a training camp in World War I. It became a permanent post in 1932. In the steel and concrete vaults of the U.S. , Ky., where Bill was a member of the U.S. Army Band.

They married in Louisville upon Bill's Army discharge and moved to Chicago, where they lived for 13 years before moving to Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

Bill is a professional musician and teacher. He studied at Chicago's VanderCook College of Music VanderCook College of Music is a private, liberal arts college in Chicago, Illinois, and is the only college in the country solely specializing in the training of music educators. Students may pursue a Bachelor of Music in Education (B.M.Ed.), Master of Music in Education (M.M.Ed.  and graduated from Northwestern University in 1948. A player of woodwind instruments for the movie and television studios and a part-time faculty member at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , for the past 30 years, he has toured Japan a dozen times while playing with the Billy Vaughn Orchestra there.

For the past 10 years, Helen has worked part-time at Rocketdyne in Canoga Park and does volunteer work in the community.

The Calkins are the parents of Linda Dusckett of Mission Viejo, Gloria Silvestri of Simi Valley and William Calkins Jr. of North Hollywood, and grandparents grandparents nplabuelos mpl

They just returned from Whitewater, Wis., where they celebrated the 102nd birthday of Bill's mother, Irene Calkins.
