JSAT, Asahikawa Medical College to Jointly Undertake Telemedicine Experiment.

 announced on May 9 that it will begin an experiment with a telemedicine service in collaboration with Asahikawa Medical College.

In the experiment, the two partners aim to confirm the feasibility of a telemedicine service via a satellite Internet service. They expect that the new system will be reliable at sites where ADSL See DSL.

ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line
 and fiber-optical connections are not available, bridging gaps in the quality of medical treatment.

Specifically, the two partners will connect the Asahikawa Medical College Hospital Telemedicine Center with the Municipal Wakkanai Hospital and Rishiri Island Rishiri Island (利尻島, rishiritō) rises out of the Sea of Japan off the coast of Hokkaidō, Japan. The island is formed by the cone-shaped extinct volcanic peak of Mount Rishiri.  National Health Insurance Hospital over the satellite Internet service offered by JSAT, and offer telemedicine treatment in ophthalmology ophthalmology (ŏf'thălmŏl`əjē), branch of medicine specializing in the anatomy, function and diseases of the eye. Ophthalmologists specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of eye disorders, vision measurements for . Images will be uploaded at 2Mbps and downloaded at 10Mbps.

The experiment will be conducted between May 12 and January 31, 2007.
