JSAT, Asahikawa Medical College to Jointly Undertake Telemedicine Experiment.

 announced on May 9 that it will begin an experiment with a telemedicine telemedicine /tele·med·i·cine/ (-med´i-sin) the provision of consultant services by off-site physicians to health care professionals on the scene, as by means of closed-circuit television.

 service in collaboration with Asahikawa Asahikawa (äsähē`käwä), city (1990 pop. 359,071), W central Hokkaido, Japan, on the Ishikari River. Asahikawa is the commercial, industrial, and rail center of a great agricultural region. Brewing, wood products, and cotton yarn are among the city's chief industries. The Asahikawa Snow Festival is a popular annual event. Medical College.

In the experiment, the two partners aim to confirm the feasibility of a telemedicine service via a satellite Internet service. They expect that the new system will be reliable at sites where ADSL and fiber-optical connections are not available, bridging gaps in the quality of medical treatment.

Specifically, the two partners will connect the Asahikawa Medical College Hospital Telemedicine Center with the Municipal Wakkanai Hospital and Rishiri Island National Health Insurance Hospital over the satellite Internet service offered by JSAT, and offer telemedicine treatment in ophthalmology. Images will be uploaded at 2Mbps and downloaded at 10Mbps.

The experiment will be conducted between May 12 and January 31, 2007.
