 JOSEPH CALIFANO ELECTED TO NEW YORK TELEPHONE BOARD
 NEW YORK, June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Joseph A. Califano Jr., a former


presidential adviser and Cabinet member, was elected today to New York Telephone's board of directors, the company announced.
 Califano, whose election is effective immediately, fills a vacancy on the 13-member board.
 An attorney and an authority on health care issues, Califano is chairman and president of the Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, an independent, non-profit research center which he founded.
 He began his long career in public service in 1961 when he was appointed special assistant to the general counsel of the Department of Defense. In 1965, he was appointed special assistant to President Lyndon Johnson, and he served as Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare from 1977 through 1979.
 Califano has written eight books, including his memoir, "The Triumph and Tragedy of Lyndon Johnson: The White House Years," which was published last year.
 He and his wife, the former Hilary Paley Byers, have five children and live in Roxbury, Conn.
