Byline: Dave Shelburne Staff Writer

Nick Jones played one of his best rounds ever Monday morning, then capped a hang-in-there second round with a final-hole birdie.

The combined effort advanced the 2001 USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  graduate to next week's U.S. Open The term U.S. Open is applied to "open" United States national championships in a particular sport, in which anybody, amateur or professional, American or non-American may compete. Jones' 67-72 for a 3-under-par 139 left him one stroke ahead of a four-way tie for second in a 36-hole qualifier that advanced just four players to the June 16-19 U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort Pinehurst Resort is an historic upmarket golf resort at Pinehurst in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Ray (71-69), finishing in the next-to-last group of the day, birdied five of his final nine holes to gain the playoff, which lasted one hole.

Jones, who won the State Amateur championship in 2000, started as fast as Ray finished.

``I played about as flawless as I could,'' he said of his opening 67 that shared low score of the day with Gibson's afternoon round. ``I think I missed only one green and just played great. It could have been even lower this morning.''

It proved just low enough for the 26-year-old former Trojan, who avoided a playoff by a stroke in advancing to his first U.S. Open.

``This afternoon,'' he said, ``I played pretty good on the front nine, (then) got a couple of bad breaks. I hit the flag on 12 and came all the way off the front of the green, and then had mud on my ball on the next hole and made bogey. So had a couple of bad breaks but other than that I played pretty solid all day.''

PGA Tour member David Berganio Jr. of Sylmar led area entries, missing the second-place playoff by a stroke after a 70-71-141 that included 11 birdies.

``When you make 11 birdies and shoot 1 under that's not very good,'' said the former Alemany High of Mission Hills standout and two-time U.S. Amateur Public Links The U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, often referred to as the Public Links or the Publinx, is a men's amateur golf tournament, one of 10 individual amateur championships organized by the United States Golf Association.  champion. ``I tried my best. That's all I can ask of myself.''

Steve Pate of Agoura Hills, another PGA Tour member, finished ninth at 73-69-142. Other area entries were Kyle Kovacs of Van Nuys, who tied for 13th at 73-73-146, and Nathan Celusta of Simi Valley, 79-74-153 for a share of 36th.
