JOINT VENTURE -- JONES CHICAGO LIGHTWAVE -- FORMED TO BUILD COMPETITIVE LOCAL ACCESS COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM IN GREATER CHICAGO AREA
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Dec 10 /PRNewswire/ -- A joint venture between Jones Lightwave Inc. and Thurston Group Inc. has been formed to construct a fiber optic local access service system in the greater Chicago and other metropolitan areas.
The new entity formed by the venture, Jones Chicago Lightwave Inc. will build a system of more than 200 miles of fiber consisting both of fiber backbone and fiber customer service loops. The backbone will transport high volume voice, data and video traffic between business centers and the loops will allow individual users access to the high volume backbone. The system has been designed to provide customers with total physical and electronic diversity and redundancy throughout the service area and will incorporate the latest SONET communications technology.
Construction of the system will begin in February 1992, with completion planned in mid-1992.
The Chicago project is the first of several such systems envisioned by the partners. Future competitive local access systems are planned for other important metropolitan areas using the same unique architectural concepts.
Glenn R. Jones, chairman of Jones International Ltd., the parent company of Jones Lightwave said, "We're very pleased to combine our resources with the Thurston Group. We strongly believe in the competitive local access business and the attractiveness of the Chicago market. Our corporate and local resources, combined with the business savvy of the Thurston Group, will be instrumental in affecting a fast and successful implementation of our strategies," he said.
Business arrangements for the certification, engineering, construction and financing of the Chicago system are presently being completed.
Jones Lightwave Inc. has been active in the competitive local access provider market, having been granted certification as a carrier in Georgia and Florida. Two Jones Lightwave systems in these states will soon initiate service to support long-term DS-3 contracts.
Thurston Group Inc., a merchant banking firm based in Chicago, has targeted the competitive local access provider business as an area of extremely high focus in their investment strategy. According to the firm's principal, Russell T. Stern, Jr., "We are very pleased to have developed a solid relationship with Jones Lightwave to culminate our efforts to develop a successful entry into this high growth market, assisting the Thurston Group in developing its portfolio in high technology businesses," he said.
Jones Lightwave's corporate parent, Jones International Ltd. has a number of companies in the communications industry, including Jones Intercable Inc. and Jones Spacelink Ltd., among the top ten largest cable television system operators in the U.S.
