JOHNSON & JOHNSON VISION PRODUCTS INC. TO CONTINUE SUPPORT OF VISION USA

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Johnson & Johnson Vision Products Inc., the manufacturer of ACUVUE(R) disposable, SUREVUE(R), and new 1-DAY ACUVUE(R) contact lenses, will once again sponsor the American Optometric Association's (AOA) VISION USA program, a non-profit, tax- exempt charity to provide basic eye health and vision care services, without charge, to individuals who have no other means of obtaining vision care.
Nationally, an estimated 115,000 people have participated in VISION USA since 1991. Almost 90 percent of those examined were found to have one or more vision problems in need of treatment. Nearly 7 percent were diagnosed with an eye disease, and approximately 5 percent had an eye condition which was sight threatening.
VISION USA has also given more than 24,000 Americans their first eye exam ever. In 1993 alone, nearly 9,000 had their eyes examined for the very first time.
Johnson & Johnson became involved with VISION USA in 1991, providing funding for the toll-free number (listed below) individuals can call to apply for a free exam. Johnson & Johnson has also supported the matching of doctors with patients, and has helped to keep the public informed about the program.
Since 1991, Johnson & Johnson has been the exclusive sponsor and has contributed a total of more than $850,000 to the program. In addition, Johnson & Johnson has announced that it will continue to provide support over the next four years by matching almost $800,000 of donations from other contact lens manufacturers, to help build an endowment for the program to enable it to be self-perpetuating.
Optometrists who volunteer for VISION USA perform a free comprehensive eye examination, diagnose and treat any eye health and/or vision problems, provide a prescription when necessary, and consult with other health care professionals when appropriate.
To qualify for a free eye exam, an individual must have a job or live in a household where there is at least one working member, have no health insurance, have an income below an established level based on household size, and have had no eye examination within 12 months.
Those who believe they meet the criteria for free eye care can apply for VISION USA January 3-31, 1994, by calling 1-800-766-4466. This number will be in service only during January. Those who qualify will be given an available appointment with an optometrist in their community during the week of March 6-12, 1994.
