JOHNSON & JOHNSON LAUNCHES 1-DAY ACUVUE(R), THE WORLD'S FIRST DAILY DISPOSABLE CONTACT LENS

NEW YORK, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) announced today the launch of 1-DAY ACUVUE(R), the world's first contact lens designed specifically to be worn for a single day, then discarded and replaced with a new pair the next day. The product will be available initially in two test markets, Omaha and Las Vegas.
The culmination of more than three years of worldwide research and close to $100 million invested in advancing the company's patented manufacturing technology, 1-DAY ACUVUE offers contact lens wearers the convenience of never having to clean their lenses, along with the excellent eye health, comfort and vision benefits of fresh, sterile lenses every day.
The 1-DAY ACUVUE launch will be supported by an advertising and promotional campaign that encourages patients to ask their doctors about a free 10-day trial (excluding professional fees). If their doctors determine that 1-DAY ACUVUE is right for them, they can personally experience the benefits of the product for 10 days.
Although retail prices will be set by eye care professionals, cost to the consumer of wearing 1-DAY ACUVUE is expected to be approximately $1.50 per day, about what is typically spent on such daily incidentals as a cup of coffee and a newspaper.
"The enormous success of ACUVUE(R), the world's first disposable contact lens, has made today's launch of 1-DAY ACUVUE possible," said Bernard W. Walsh, president of Vistakon, the Johnson & Johnson division that manufactures and markets the lens.
"ACUVUE introduced the concept of weekly disposable wear to the country five years ago, and since then, both doctors and patients have enthusiastically embraced disposability and the `shorter is better' philosophy we pioneered," Walsh said. Lens sales reflect that popularity: ACUVUE has become the best selling contact lens in the world.
"After the launch of ACUVUE, doctors began telling us that the ultimate disposable lens would be one that was worn for a single day, then thrown away," said Walsh.
"To make this dream a reality, we needed to dramatically advance the patented stabilized soft molding technology we developed to produce ACUVUE. The challenge was to make precision, high quality contact lenses at a cost low enough to make daily disposable affordable," he said.
"We did this by totally automating the line -- right down to computerized inspection of each lens."
While optimizing the manufacturing process, Johnson & Johnson conducted two extensive studies to determine the benefits and acceptability of wearing new lenses every day.
Beginning in the fall of 1991, a two-year clinical research study was conducted at 12 sites in the United States. Involving more than 500 patients, study results after one year showed that daily disposal significantly outperformed ordinary daily wear contact lenses with regard to vision, comfort, patient reported symptoms and overall patient satisfaction.
In a separate study involving more than 50 renowned doctors and nearly 1,500 patients (in the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Sweden and Austria), more than 90 percent of patients were very satisfied with the daily disposal system.
1-DAY ACUVUE will be available in Omaha and Las Vegas in early July and will be rolled out nationally in the future.
