WOODLAND HILLS -- John C. McKeon, president and chief executive officer of the Los Angeles Newspaper Group The Los Angeles Newspaper Group is an umbrella group of local daily newspapers published in the greater Los Angeles area by MediaNews Group. The news coverage of the newspapers are mainly local stories. , will take over as publisher of the Daily News of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , George Riggs, president and chief executive officer of the California Newspaper Partnership, announced Monday.

McKeon, 49, succeeds Tracy Rafter who served as publisher for more than two years and previously was in charge of advertising and marketing for LANG, which includes the Daily News and seven other daily newspapers in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  that are operated by Denver-based MediaNews Group Not to be confused with Media General, an unrelated newspaper and TV group.
MediaNews Group, based in Denver, Colorado, is one of the largest newspaper companies in the United States.

Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  in August and will retain those responsibilities.

In making the announcement, Riggs said in a statement that the appointment of McKeon as publisher and other changes are ``part of an overall plan to better adapt our business cost structure to the fundamental changes that are under way in the publishing industry.''

Among the changes affecting the Daily News are the appointment of several other LANG executives to head departments at the Daily News and the elimination of a total of 21 jobs at the paper, including four in the editorial department. Harold F. Woldt Jr. was named circulation direction of the Daily News in addition to his role overseeing the circulation departments at other LANG papers; Jim Janiga, head of human resources The fancy word for "people." The human resources department within an organization, years ago known as the "personnel department," manages the administrative aspects of the employees.  for LANG, will also head the Daily News human resources department; and Terri Nelson, in charge of LANG finance departments, will also serve as the Daily News' director of finance.

``I'm deeply grateful to Tracy Rafter and the other Daily News executives for the great contributions to the newspaper's development in recent years but the pressures on the news and information industries have forced us to consolidate functions so that we can maximize our resources,'' McKeon said.

``I believe we are geared up to grow our business and improve our service to the public both in our printed and online products.''
