JOHN A. ZIEGLER JR., FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE, TO JOIN DICKINSON WRIGHT

JOHN A. ZIEGLER JR., FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE,
 TO JOIN DICKINSON WRIGHT
DETROIT, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- John A. Ziegler Jr. will become of counsel to Dickinson, Wright, Moon, Van Dusen & Freeman on Dec. 1.
Born in Grosse Pointe, Mich., Ziegler earned his bachelor's and J.D. degrees from the University of Michigan. He started his legal career with Dickinson Wright in 1957 (then known as Dickinson, Wright, McLean and Cudlip). He established his own law firm, Ziegler, Dykhouse and Wise, in 1970.
Law was the path which ultimately took Ziegler to the highest levels of the NHL at a time when major league sports was entering a new and sometimes litigious phase of growth and development.
In 1959, Ziegler began his legal representation for the Norris family interests, including Olympia Stadium and the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League.
In the years to come, he went on to serve as vice president and general counsel of the Red Wings, while maintaining his own private law practice. Ziegler also represented the team on the NHL Board of Governors as alternate governor. This began his rise to the top of the NHL Board of Governors and the top executive management of the League.
Ziegler served on several committees and was named chairman of the board of governors of the NHL in 1976. A year later, he was named both president of the NHL, the League's fourth, and chief executive officer, the first in the history of the NHL. In fact, Ziegler was the first head of a major league sport to be named CEO.
During his administration, the NHL experienced a complete financial turnaround, which continued through the '80s and into the '90s. In Ziegler's time, the League went from a major sport to big business. "A Vision of the 90s," the League's first-ever strategic business plan, embodied a bold expansion strategy implemented in 1991. The plan set into motion more than $450 million in new franchise and arena investments during a tough recession.
"We are very proud to have John Ziegler back with us," said J. Bryan Williams, Dickinson Wright executive partner. "He is not only a respected litigator and entertainment and business law specialist, but he is also a man of vision and high integrity."
Ziegler will join the Detroit office of the firm. He and his wife Kay (the former Kay Brubeck, interior designer and antique appraiser) will maintain a residence in Ortonville, Mich., with houses in New York City and the United Kingdom. Ziegler has a son and three daughters by his first marriage.
Dickinson Wright is one of the largest law firms in Michigan with more than 240 attorneys. Besides Detroit, offices are located in Bloomfield Hills, Lansing and Grand Rapids, Mich.; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; and Warsaw, Poland. The firm, which is more than 100 years old, specializes in corporate and environmental law, real estate, labor relations, finance and litigation.
