JOCKEYS IN HOMESTRETCH; UPSET KEEPS DELAHOUSSAYE IN HUNT.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Daily News Staff Writer

Eddie Delahoussaye Edward J. Delahoussaye (born September 21 1951) was an American thoroughbred jockey from New Iberia, Louisiana.

He began his career in 1968 and in ten short years became the top American jockey with 384 wins.

In the process he pulled into a tie with Kent Desormeaux Kent J. Desormeaux (born February 27, 1970, in Maurice, Vermilion Parish, Louisiana) is an American thoroughbred horse racing Hall of Fame jockey who holds the U.S. record for most races won in a single year.  for second in the Del Mar jockey standings with 36 winners each - two behind leader Alex Solis Alex O. Solis (born March 25, 1964 in Panama City, Panama) is a jockey based in the United States. He currently lives in Glendora, California and rides predominantly in Southern California. He first gained national prominence when he won the 1986 Preakness Stakes with Snow Chief. .

With two days left in the 43-day season - today and Wednesday - it appears we're in for another tight Del Mar jockeys' race like those won by Chris McCarron in 1995 and Solis in 1996.

If Solis wins, it will be the seventh straight time he has led a major thoroughbred meeting, matching the Southern California record set by Bill Shoemaker in 1950-52.

``Wow. I'd be honored to be next to a guy like Bill Shoemaker,'' said Solis, who won the opening race Sunday, was disqualified dis·qual·i·fy

from victory in another and finished second aboard Crafty Friend.

If Delahoussaye or Desormeaux wins, it will be personally satisfying.

Desormeaux is trying to forget a horrible Hollywood Park meet that certified his fall from grace.

Delahoussaye turns 46 on Sept. 21, hasn't won a title in four years and has finally shaken sinus problems.

``I'm healthy and the horses have been running good,'' Delahoussaye said. ``I only ride so many horses (the fewest among the leaders). There's guys who are out there in the trenches.

``If I can be leading rider, it would be quite an accomplishment for me. If not, I've had a great meet anyway.''

Eddie D. and Benchmark ($12.40) were nine lengths off the pace early in the mile handicap but swept wide to pass a tiring Northern Afleet and then take the lead from Crafty Friend 10 jumps from the wire.

Delahoussaye is scheduled to ride 18 horses today and Wednesday, Desormeaux 16, Solis 21.

Rarity: Babalover and Hogans Alley finished in a dead heat for second in the sixth race, then became co-winners when Letter of Marque Noun 1. letter of marque - a license to a private citizen to seize property of another nation

 was disqualified.

The stewards ruled Letter of Marque (ridden by Solis) bumped Babalover (McCarron) in the stretch. There wasn't much doubt about that. The question was whether Hogans Alley (Gary Stevens) caused the whole thing by angling off the rail.

An even dozen: Stevens, out of contention for the riding title, put his name in the Del Mar record book anyway Sunday.

Relaxing Rhythm and Yokama became his 11th and 12th stakes winners of the meet, tying the record set by Laffit Pincay in 1976 and equaled by McCarron in 1995.

Stevens will have chances to break the stakes record when he rides Skywalker's Choice in the $75,000 Live the Dream and Double Honor in the $250,000 Del Mar Futurity The Del Mar Futurity is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. Different strokes: Stevens' winners Sunday were impressive in their own ways. Relaxing Rhythm had to work hard to edge Alzora in the $78,950 Torrey Pines and remain unbeaten in six starts. Yokama won by nine easy lengths in the $76,675 CHBPA and TOC Handicap.

Relaxing Rhythm, a 3-year-old filly, is a daughter of Easy Goer, the 1989 Belmont Stakes winner, and has the trainer (David Hofmans) and owner (Frank Stronach) of '97 Belmont winner Touch Gold. She began her career in Canada.
