JOBLESS BENEFITS EXTENDED IN WASHINGTON STATE

JOBLESS BENEFITS EXTENDED IN WASHINGTON STATE
OLYMPIA, Wash., Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The Washington State

Employment Security Department said it began mailing packets today to more than 56,000 long-term jobless who exhausted their regular benefits and may be eligible for Emergency Unemployment Compensation.
Under a new federal law, workers in Washington state who exhausted their regular benefits after March 1 and are still unemployed can receive 13 weeks of extended benefits.
The packets contain instructions, applications and claim forms to be completed and returned to the local Job Service Centers. This will enable the department to begin mailing benefit checks before Thanksgiving.
Commissioner Vernon Stoner said claimants should carefully follow the instructions for reopening their claim. Some individuals who were mailed packets may have already returned to work and are not eligible.
"We are sending the packets to everyone who exhausted benefits since March 1 to make sure that anyone who may qualify is aware of the program," Stoner said. "Anyone who hasn't received a packet by Tuesday and believes they are eligible should contact the nearest Job Service Center."
Current claimants will be informed of the extended benefits before their regular claim runs out.
The average weekly benefit for claimants in Washington state is $172. The maximum is $258 and the minimum is $64.
