Schmidt was announced Friday as the winner of the 1996 Fernando Award. Schmidt, a bank vice president and manager, is only the second woman to receive the San Fernando Valley's top volunteer award since its inception in 1959. She said she was honored to be recognized by the community she's dedicated to serving. ``I'm just excited and stunned and speechless - which is a little unusual for me,'' Schmidt said. ``To be acknowledged by the incredible people I work with . . . is just an outstanding feeling.'' About 400 people gathered Friday night at the Warner Center Marriott Hotel for a black-tie dinner and ceremony to honor the Fernando Award winner and the four finalists.
