 JIM SMITH ELECTED PRESIDENT OF GERBER
 FREMONT, Mich., May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of


Gerber Products Company (NYSE: GEB) elected James T. Smith as president.
 As president of the Gerber Products Company, Smith reports to Al Piergallini, chairman of the board and chief executive officer. Smith is a member of the Gerber board of directors and continues to head the Gerber Products Division which produces and markets baby food and baby care products in the Western Hemisphere. Worldwide product sourcing and production also is in Smith's sphere of responsibility.
 Smith joined Gerber in January 1991 as executive vice president, and president - Gerber Products Division. Prior to Gerber, he held a variety of increasingly responsible general management and marketing positions for the Procter & Gamble Company during a 20-year period. He was located in Europe from 1987 through 1990, his last P&G position being general manager, Germany - Health and Beauty Care.
 Smith holds a M.B.A. and a B.S. in chemistry from Cornell University.
