JIM CARDWELL AND ED BYRNES NAMED EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENTS AT WARNER HOME VIDEO

BURBANK, Calif., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- James F. Cardwell has been promoted to the position of executive vice president/North America and Edward J. Byrnes becomes executive vice president/International at Warner Home Video (WHV), it was announced today by WHV President Warren Lieberfarb.
"Jim and Ed both joined what was then known as Warner Communications (WCI) in 1977, before there was even a video business," noted Lieberfarb, in making today's announcement. "They've both been with our video division since the early 1980s, playing key roles in building this business into the worldwide powerhouse it is today.
"Jim's contribution to the management and recent restructuring of our North American operation has enabled us to handle multiple labels and libraries with even greater efficiency and profitability," he added, "both in the rental and the sell-through sectors."
(In addition to Warner Bros. feature films, WHV handles new releases from the MGM/UA Home Video, HBO Video and Cannon Video labels. Catalog titles available through WHV include the UA library owned by MGM and the MGM library owned by Turner Broadcasting.)
"Similarly, under Ed Byrnes, our international operations have continued to expand, not just geographically, but also in terms of the types of programming we distribute overseas," said Lieberfarb. "In addition to establishing new affiliates in Finland, Czechoslovakia, and Portugal, and new licensee relationships in areas like the Eastern Bloc, Egypt and Saudia Arabia, he's also been a pioneer in the marketing of long-form television programming on video in international markets."
Prior to today's promotions, Cardwell and Byrnes were senior vice presidents and general managers of their respective operations. Both will continue to report directly to division head Lieberfarb.
Cardwell joined WHV as director of Financial Planning in 1983, rising to the rank of vice president of Worldwide Planning and Operations before being named senior vice president and general manager of WHV's entire North American operation in 1988. He came to WHV from Warner Communications (WCI), where he had been audit manager for the Western United States and Latin America. Prior to joining WCI in 1977, Cardwell worked at the accounting firm of Coopers & Lybrand both in his native England and East Africa. A chartered accountant, he received his master's degree in economics from the University of Manchester.
Byrnes joined WHV as managing director of the company's affiliate in the United Kingdom in 1981. In 1983, still based in London, he was promoted to vice president, with responsibility for WHV operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In 1985, he relocated to WHV's world headquarters in Burbank, becoming vice president and general manager of WHV/International early the following year. He was named senior vice president and general manager for WHV/International in 1988.
Byrnes originally came to WHV from WEA Records Ltd. (later the Warner Music Group), a subsidiary of Warner Communications (WCI), which he joined as a director in 1977 after six years as controller for RCA and Sunbury Music Ltd. in the United Kingdom. He began his career working for Conoco (Continental Oil) in a number of capacities, including those of manager of company operations and treasurer, with assignments in the Middle East, South America and throughout Europe.
A native of Washington, Byrnes did his undergraduate work at Georgetown University. He holds a master of business administration from Trinity College.
