JEWS TO LIGHT THE YAHRZEIT FOR 6 MILLION HOLOCAUST VICTIMS.

Byline: Holly Andres Staff Writer

AGOURA HILLS - Yom ha-Shoah, Holocaust Holocaust (hŏl`əkôst', hō`lə–), name given to the period of persecution and extermination of European Jews by Nazi Germany.  Remembrance Day, will be observed Monday at a special service at Temple Beth Haverim in Agoura Hills.

In 1951, the Israeli Knesset established the 27th day of the Jewish month of Nisan as the day to remember the estimated 6 million Jews who were killed in the Holocaust. It is also a day to remember the heroes who were able to save lives during the Nazi era.

``It's important to remind people today of the past,'' said Bill Spector, chairman of the temple's committee planning the service. ``The people who experienced the atrocities are aging rapidly. We need to find them now and invite them to speak. It's important that we get their perspective. It's important for our children to learn what has taken place and that people are capable of creating this kind of an environment.

``Yom ha-Shoah is becoming an extremely important observance,'' he said. ``It's a deeply emotional service.''

Holocaust survivor Joseph Rebhun will be the guest speaker at the service. He is expected to talk about his personal experiences in Poland under Nazi rule and his thoughts on surviving and moving on to a new life in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. .

The Conservative temple's annual program will include prayers, readings, personal testimony, choir music and a children's presentation.

Temple members have been asked to light a yellow yahrzeit, a memorial candle, in their homes Monday as a personal ritual of remembrance. Yahrzeit, a Yiddish word meaning ``a year's time,'' marks an anniversary of a death. It is customary for yahrzeit candles to be lighted every year in honor of a loved one who has died.

``Our Men's Club sent the candles to our members. We're using yellow candles because it recalls the yellow stars that Jews were ordered to wear on their clothing in order to identify themselves as Jews,'' said Rabbi Gershon Johnson. The temple is encouraging others in the community, who may not be able to attend a Yom ha-Shoah service, to light their own yahrzeit candles at home.

Johnson said the observance is particularly important because there are still some people who deny the Holocaust ever happened. He referred to the recent libel libel 1) n. to publish in print (including pictures), writing or broadcast through radio, television or film, an untruth about another which will do harm to that person or his/her reputation, by tending to bring the target into ridicule, hatred, scorn or contempt of  case in England that David Irving For other persons of the same name, see David Irving (footballer) and David Irving (politician).
