JEWS SCHEDULE EVENTS TO ASSIST PUBLIC ON MITZVAH DAY '97.

Thousands of Jews in the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and Ventura county areas will be out Sunday doing good deeds in their community through more than 100 projects on Mitzvah Day '97.

``It's a wonderful expression of our community coming together. A true community event with incredible cooperation, especially between the synagogues,'' said Barbara Creme, of the Jewish Federation/Valley Alliance, which initiated the first Mitzvah Day in 1995.

Creme said the day is an expression of the Jewish value of tikkun olam Tikkun olam (Hebrew: תיקון עולם) is a Hebrew phrase that means "repairing the world" or "perfecting the world." Tikkun olam is an important concept in Judaism. , the restoring or repairing of the world.

One of the more visible activities will be at Lake Balboa Park with the planting of 100 trees in a ``mitzvah grove.''

Congregants from Stephen S. Wise Temple, Temple Judea, Temple Ahavat Shalom, and students from Heschel Day School will join the Tree People and the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks in a tree planting ceremony and the actual planting. Los Angeles Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski also is expected to attend.

``It doesn't matter what you do, plant a tree, fix a meal for a hungry person, reading to the elderly. It's that you're doing something for somebody else,'' says Diane Kabat, chairwoman of the social action committee at Stephen S. Wise Temple. ``It's really about renewal for me. It's also a teaching agent for our children, where we get more out of doing than our own personal gratification,'' Kabat said.

Other Mitzvah Day '97 activities will include painting and fixing up the Center for Independent Living in Van Nuys; a barbecue and games day for 100 less-privileged children hosted by the B'nai B'rith Reunion Chapter at the Guadalupe Community Center in Canoga Park; trail clean-up in the Santa Monica Mountains The Santa Monica Mountains are a low transverse range in southern California in the United States. Mitzvah Day '97 is a galvanizing galvanizing, process of coating a metal, usually iron or steel, with a protective covering of zinc.
