JEWISH SCHOOL PLAN HITS SNAGS.

Byline: - Rachel Uranga

The cities of Agoura Hills and Calabasas have joined a chorus of distressed Old Agoura homeowners concerned about plans to build a private Jewish school in a rustic enclave bordering the Santa Monica Mountains The Santa Monica Mountains are a low transverse range in southern California in the United States. In a Dec. 11 letter to the county's regional planning regional planning: see city planning.  committee, Agoura Hills officials blasted plans for a 750-student school that would use Canwood Street, near the Ventura Freeway The Ventura Freeway is a freeway in southern California running from Ventura to Pasadena. They also criticized the proposed 73-acre school's design that they called urban and said would disrupt the rural character of the community. Concerns over the impact on wildlife were also stressed in a letter by Calabasas officials.

Mike Kamino, Agoura Hills' director of community development, said the school's initial assessment of the environmental effects of the proposed Abraham Joshua Heschel Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel (January 11, 1907, Warsaw, then Russian Empire – December 23, 1972) was considered by many to be one of the most significant Jewish theologians of the 20th century.  Day School-West were a good first step but that substantial work is still necessary.

A hearing scheduled for today before the county Regional Planning Commission was postponed and will be rescheduled.

So far, the commission has received 92 letters from parents whose children attend or formerly attended the campus in support of the proposal. At least 36 letters, mostly by Old Agoura residents, have been submitted in opposition.

Rick Wetz, a volunteer board member for the school, said the project that is spurring an outcry from the 403-home Old Agoura community would provide a badly needed educational center for the Conejo Valley's Jewish community - one of the fastest growing in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. .

Currently the school operates a 150-student facility in Liberty Canyon, an unincorporated area In law, an unincorporated area is a region of land that is not a part of any municipality.
