JETHAWKS PLAYERS AND STAFF READY FOR BUTLER'S RETURN MASHORE GAINS EXPERIENCE WHILE MANAGER IS SIDELINED.

Byline: GIDEON RUBIN Special to the Daily News

JetHawks hitting coach Damon Mashore hopes to one day manage a professional baseball team. Taking charge last week, after manager Brett Butler's sudden illness, was not what he had in mind.

, was expected to rejoin the team Monday.

``It's a good experience, but not a good way to get it,'' Mashore said.

Mashore said he has spoken on the phone daily with Butler and received managerial instruction from him and from Arizona Diamondbacks This article is about the baseball team. For other uses, see Diamondback.

front-office personnel, including farm director A.J. Hinch, who was in Lancaster last week.

Mashore said most of the phone conversations have centered around the well-being of the slumping JetHawks - Lancaster concluded a dreadful April with a California League-worst 7-17 record - than his own health.

Butler was hospitalized Monday night after experiencing severe indigestion indigestion or dyspepsia, discomfort during or after eating caused by some interference with the normal digestive process. Because Butler's medical history includes two bouts with cancer, doctors kept the 48-year-old JetHawks manager in the hospital for observation and testing.

Mashore did not know the extent to which Butler could resume his full workload upon returning Monday, but Butler has told him he feels fine.

``(Butler) is a type-A personality, and that's a positive,'' Mashore said.

For his part, Mashore is glad to be handing the reigns back to Butler.

``It's been a learning experience,'' Mashore said. ``I've made some good moves, and I've made some bad moves.''

Mashore said the JetHawks responded well to the admittedly difficult circumstances. Lancaster went 3-3 under Mashore.

``I think it gave them a wake-up call,'' Mashore said. ``When you put on a uniform, it's a special thing, and this reminds you that at any time stuff can be taken away from you.''

JetHawks reliever Jared Doyle said Butler's well being has been on everyone's minds the past week. He acknowledged it was hard seeing Butler when he visited the team last week - Butler, he said, looked like he'd lost 10 pounds.

Butler survived throat cancer late in his playing career, in 1996, and has since recovered from prostate cancer prostate cancer, cancer originating in the prostate gland. ``He's already gone through a lot,'' Doyle said. ``This is just another battle for him.''
