JETHAWKS NOTEBOOK: PITCHERS COULD GET A CHANCE AT MAJORS : MARTE, SPENCER SEEM LIKELY CANDIDATES.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

The list of former JetHawks now in the major leagues stands at four. But Jose Cruz Jose Luis Cruz (Cheo) can refer to different people:
  • Camarón de la Isla, stage name of José Monje Cruz
  • José Cruz (Sr.) (born 1947), a baseball player
  • José Cruz, Jr.
Jr., Ken Cloude, Trey Moore and Shane Monahan could have company in 1999.

The most likely candidates to get a chance would seem to be pitchers Damaso Marte and Sean Spencer.

Spencer, whose career was almost ended when he underwent surgery three years ago, followed up a strong 1997 season for the JetHawks with impressive performances at both Double and Triple-A levels in 1998.

Marte is an enigmatic performer but has one of the best arms in the organization and could have a slight edge over Spencer. The two former JetHawks teammates are probably vying for one southpaw bullpen spot.

``Basically, anyone who comes to major-league camp will have an opportunity to make the team,'' Piniella said. ``It will be wide open. Our preference has been to bring our young kids along slow.''

Not anymore.

Aqua man: Scott Steinmann, a JetHawk in the team's 1996 inaugural season, filled in as hitting coach in Lancaster last season when Doug Saunders took a leave of absence.

That was the 25-year-old's coaching debut and the Mariners rewarded the former catcher from Cincinnati with a permanent job as catching instructor/coach with the (short-season) Single-A Everett AquaSox of the Northwest League.

The Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers will have a definite Lancaster flavor to their staff. Former JetHawks manager Dave Brundage will assume an assistant coach position for the second consecutive year and Antelope Valley native Jim Slaton will serve as Tacoma's pitching coach after serving a similar duty in his hometown the past two seasons.

Montane, 25, pitched well in 11 starts with the JetHawks in 1996 but had two horrendous stints in Double-A, including an 0-8, 7.53 ERA stretch in 1997 before he was demoted back to Lancaster, where he went 1-2 in six outings.

Back in America: Finally, Brendan Kingman has found a home in the states. You're the best: Former JetHawks made up a large chunk of postseason award winners among Seattle's minor-league clubs. Hinchliffe was Triple-A Tacoma's top pitcher.
