But a once-crowded stable of outfielders thinned rather abruptly, and Espino didn't waste a rare start.

Espino untied Saturday's game with a two-run single and contributed a courtesy diving catch in right field as the JetHawks beat the Stockton Ports 11-4 before 3,783 at Lancaster Municipal Stadium.

Two days ago, there were six outfielders on the roster, and Espino, promoted to Lancaster from Wisconsin of the Midwest League on July 9, managed just 26 at-bats in 12 games played.

But by Saturday, Luis Tinoco had left for Double-A Orlando, Fla., and Anton French was unavailable after banging up his ankle on Friday.

With the bases loaded in the sixth inning and the score tied 3-3, Espino punched a base hit through the left side to score both Cirilo Cruz and Karl Thompson.

Espino, a 21-year-old from La Vega, Dominican Republic, raised his RBI RBI

In addition to dropping the Ports (63-63) four games behind them in the Valley Division wild-card race, the JetHawks (67-59) gained a tie with Modesto for the top spot. The A's lost 10-2 to Lake Elsinore.

In the same inning that hosted Espino's coming-out party, Brendan Kingman evened the game at 3-3 with a solo homer off Stockton starter Derek Lee (5-9).

Roster move: The JetHawks will activate pitcher Jason Bond from the disabled list today.

Tonight's pitching matchup: Ports RH Al Hawkins (3-1, 2.52) vs. JetHawks LH Jordan Zimmerman (0-0); 5:05 at Lancaster Municipal Stadium.
