The Palmdale plant is responsible for the design, development and manufacture of the control surfaces, fixed edges and radomes for all three F-35 versions: conventional takeoff and landing, short takeoff/vertical landing and carrier. The control surface will be installed on the first aircraft in Fort Worth.

The F-35 control surfaces and edges are designed to be precision lightweight parts that will be interchangeable and replaceable on each version, avoiding costly modifications.

A total of 23 F-35s will be produced for testing under the current system development and demonstration phase.

Lockheed Martin is developing the F-35 in conjunction with principal partners Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems.
